Title: how many kilobytes make up a 1 megabyte, and how many megabyte
Post by: shaggy_10462 on April 01, 2007, 04:10:06 AM
make up 1 giga byte? can some please explain to me in detail how this system works.for example how do i translate back and forth between kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes.

As I understand it...byte = 1kilobyte = approx. 1000 bytesmegabyte = 1000 kilobytesgigabyte = 1000 megabytes

2^10 Bytes = 1024 bytes = 1KByte2^10 KBytes = 1024 KBytes = 1MByte2^10 MBytes = 1024 MBytes = 1GByte2^10 GBytes = 1024Gbyte = 1Tera Byte

1,024 is the answer to both.1,024 KB = 1 MB1,024 MB = 1 GBKilo - thousandMega - millionGiga - billion1,024 is the closest number to 1,000 that is a power of 2.

Okay, here's the rundown: 8 bits make a byte, 1024 bytes make a kilobyte, 1024 kilobytes makes a megabyte, 1024 megabytes makes a gigabyte, and just incase you were wondering, 1024 gigabytes make a terabyte.

There are approximately 1,000 kilobytes in a megabyte, and approximately 1,000 megabytes in a gigabyte. If you want to know the exact figures I suggest you look them up in Wikipedia.org

1024 kilobytes make 1 megabyte, and 1024 megabytes make 1 gigabyte. But for simplicity's sake, most people multiply by 1000 to get from kilobyte to megabyte, and from megabyte to gigabyte (that's just an approximation).

1024 Kilo bytes make 1MB (1024x1024=1048576bytes) 1024 Mega bytes make 1GB (1024^3   = 1073741824bytes)

This is a confusing topic to explain.  There's two ways to go from mega to giga, or from kilo to bytes, etc.  One is to simply multiply or divide by 1000.  The other is to multiply or divide by 1024, which happens to be 2 to the power of 10.  It's a nice, binary number for digital computations.  Unfortunately, the choice between them has not been very well standardized. Some storage manufacturers like to consider a gigabyte to simply be one billion bytes.  They are using multiples of 1000.  Whereas MS Windows likes to use the binary multiples of 1024.  That is why you can buy a 200 gigabyte harddrive and MS Windows will report it as something much less:200,000,000,000 / 1024 = 195,312,500 KB195,312,500 / 1024 = 190,734.9 MB190,734.9 / 1024 = 186.3 GBIt seems like you're losing almost 14 gigabytes, but you're actually getting exactly what you paid for.  It's just that the two standards are being mixed.  I have seen an attempt to clear up the confusion by calling the 1024 version a kibibyte or whatever instead, but I've never actually seen that put into practice yet.
