Title: Converting attic space into a sleeping area?
Post by: Shelley L on May 19, 2007, 01:10:11 AM
I am considering converting the attic space in our single story house in Southern California into a bedroom for my 12 year old son.  I knew a girl in high schoool who's mom did this in their house, which was similar in size and lay-out my current house (before you suggest it, I no longer know this person.  I just remember her house).  It was, basically, a small space with a matress on the floor and room for a TV - more a sleeping space than an actual "bedroom".  It was cool, though.  Has anyone done anything like this?  What is the best way to go about this?

Shelly,You can make it as elegant or as basic as you desire.I would put OSB on the floor, install outlets and lights  and then put dry wall on the rafters, fill in the ends, tape and mud the dry wall and paint it. Put a reasonable carpet remant on the floor and turn it over to him to hide in and never go there. He will love you for it.

I agree w/ MT C.Also since Im sure the houses there rnt much different than here in the Phx area. & Im sure U dont wanna attempt hauling large items up there (ie dresser). Might wanna think about this....Building a dresser or armoire up there inside the attic on the wall that the ceiling slopes to, to get better advantage of the space U have to work w/.  This beats haul'g furniture up there & then having to haul it back downstairs & get'g rid of it cuz he needs more stuff to put things on/in. Also, if there's enough room to pull this off, build a pedestal w/ drawers to put under the bed for even more storage space.  Maybe do this 1st then the built in dresser/closet areas. Also, go thru all of his stuff w/ him & figure out what can go & what can stay for him to move up to the attic. Cant go wrong building stuff up there 1st & then hauling the bed up there.

First and foremost, make sure that your ceiling joists are adequate for the new loading.  Was this area designed for storage?  If so, it should be ok, if not, they are probably undersized.  Do you have a full set of steps into the attic and do you have a way to put a window, at least 2' wide by 3' tall?  Stairs and a window for egress are required by firecode for any bedroom.
